about us and our bloodline
I am Jean Wagster, a second generation breeder of ONLY Westies (West Highland White Terriers). My start of love of Westies and the majority of my knowledge came from my mother, Norma Abel. She owned and operated Abel’s Country Aire Kennel in Foristell, Missouri (located just out of Wentzville). My parents started with dogs when they moved from the city to country. My dad liked the Dalmatians, so they purchased one, bred, and my mom showed in the Dalmatian club shows. My older brother (Jim) showed the Dalmatians along with her. They did well, but the Dalmatians were just too big for my older sister (Janet, she was small), to try to train. Therefore, Mom started to research to find a breed she thought they would like. She purchased her first Westie around 1970 after doing a great deal of research and a lot of waiting on breeders list to purchase one. She had a breeder (that raised Westies and Cairns) contact her that had a Cairn available, so mom purchased it for my sister (Janet). A couple of months after she purchased the Cairn, a breeder had a Westie puppy available. I begged her to purchase it when I was 5 years old, and since Janet was going to train the Cairn in 4-H, the Westie could be mine. That started it all!! I trained my Westie, Gal, along with the other older 4-H kids. I did get to show at the fun show, and I won my class at 5 years old with Gal. Mom raised the Westies and the Cairns ever since. I have never been without a Westie, and Janet’s daughter (Kristy Duello) still raises (hobby breeder) the Cairns. We both showed the Cairns and Westies throughout our years in 4-H. They are both very intelligent breeds.
Mom continued to improve and develop an awesome bloodline of Westies throughout the years with a great deal of research and a lot of real life experiences. Her goal was to have healthy and happy (well-tempered) puppies that possessed the conformation standards of the AKC West Highland White Terrier breed.
I am a little prejudice, but my I have grown up with and love and favor my Westies, as you can see. I was very active throughout my whole life helping with all aspects of the puppies and adult parents with Mom’s operations, and after getting Gal, I have never been without a Westie since.
In 1985 I married my school sweetheart, Wendall, and moved out. We both worked, and were busy with starting our life together. When I moved out my Westie was part of the package. After discussions with Wendall and Mom, I started to raise Westies as well. From 1985 through 1988 we lived in St. Charles County area, out of Foristell, where we had our first child (Justin), and we raised a couple of litters with our Westie momma (Snuggles). Wendall was now owning and operating his own company, “WW Construction,” and we were starting our family.
From 1988 – 2005 we lived in the Warren County area, located off the north side of I-70 off of North Stracks Church Road in Wright City. There we had our second child (Tyler), and started breeding (as a hobby breeder) a couple of Westies.
In 2005, our family (kids being teenagers now) moved to a farm in Montgomery County, Missouri, located between St. Louis and Columbia, off of the north side of I-70. This is where we are currently located. It is very peaceful farm country. We love it, and have a much bigger area for my Westies. We were able to increase our Westie family, as well as set up our kennel here. My Mom retired, we acquired her remaining adult females and male, and started to keep females to increase our Westie line. In 2011, Justin, our oldest, married a wonderful girl (Emily), and we were blessed with an adorable granddaughter (Karlee) in 2014. Karlee just loves the puppies and mommas. The highlight of her day is to go and play with them or give the mommas treats. Justin and Emily had our second beautiful granddaughter, Briley in Sept. of 2017. She is right with her sister, Karlee, playing with the puppies. Tyler, our youngest, married his sweetheart, a terrific girl, (Toni) in September of 2016. Toni and Tyler are located very close to our place, and are great help with all the hands on kennel operations. Tyler and Toni had there first, a boy July 25, 2018 named Colt and newest addition Colt's little sister, Blake born on February 19, 2021. With my grandchildren helping and playing, my puppies get lots of children attention and playtimes.
Until Mom retired, I only had a couple of breeding mommas. I started with her bloodline, and am still carrying it on. I am striving to also improve my line and produce well-tempered, healthy puppies with conformation standards of AKC.
There is always something to do here at the farm with either the kennel (playing with our babies), construction company, momma cow operation, or one of the best things is playing with our grandbabies, Karlee, Briley, Colt and Blake!
